Nylon vs. Polyester: what is the difference?

Thursday, December 16, 2021 9:39 AM

When buying a carpet, it comes down to the fibers. What are the fibers? Two popular fibers are nylon and polyester. They are both quality fibers and are often chosen by homeowners for their homes. This is a common question that we get at Bridgeport Carpets, one that we can answer below.

Nylon is known for its ultra-resilience. You can step on it, and it will spring back into its original form, leaving no footprint. This is especially true for heavy furniture and electronics. When moved out of a room of nylon, it will spring back to its original form, and you can't tell that the furniture or electronics were in the room in the first place!

Polyester is a quality fiber for carpeting. It is known for its vibrant colors, which are in sharp contrast with nylon. Nylon tends to be matte and dull colors. Polyester is also known for its stain resistance. It is a hydrophobic material, which means that the fibers will not absorb stains and spills.

Nylon stain resistance

Nylon has stain resistance too, but it is applied chemically in the manufacturing phase. The nylon fibers are treated with a stain-resistant chemical that makes them impervious to spills, like wine. If left untreated, the wine would be absorbed by the nylon fibers.

Comparing the two

It is important to remember that there are levels of quality to both nylon and polyester. So you must make sure they are equivalent when comparing them. For example, if you had high-quality polyester, it might be equal to low-quality nylon in durability.

Another factor to consider is the price point. Nylon can be more expensive than polyester. This is due to polyester's low production value. However, it is made from recycled plastic drinking bottles, thus making it very eco-friendly.
